Summary Turkey – A troubled multi-regional player

Situated at the crossroads between different geopolitically important regions, Turkey has become an increasingly active player in its immediate neighbourhood and beyond. Ambitious foreign policy concepts such as “strategic depth”, “rhythmic diplomacy” or “zero problems” aimed at deepening Turkey’s and the ruling party’s economic, cultural, and not least political impact. Turkey’s aspiration to become a model for others faded with growing authoritarianism, the personalization of power and an enduring economic crisis. In recent years, Turkish foreign policy has less relied on soft power and became more defiant and more militarized. What are the ruling AKP’s and President Erdoğan’s strategies towards the neighbourhood? How to deal with geostrategic shifts in the region? Can Turkey reconcile with Egypt and the Gulf countries and at what price? And how does Russia’s invasion of Ukraine affect Turkey’s interests? The online panel will discuss these and other relevant topics.
