Afghanistan Conference
Track II Diplomacy – Vienna Process for a Democratic Afghanistan
The Vienna Process for a Democratic Afghanistan has brought together representatives of different Afghan opposition groups and allowed for exchange on a potential democratic future of Afghanistan. The process has been facilitated by oiip-President Wolfgang Petritsch and sponsored by the private Austrian RD Foundation.
The process has so far entailed two conferences:
The first conference held between September 15 – 17, 2022 in Vienna provided for the first time after the takeover of power by the Taliban opposition groups to exchange on Afghanistan’s future. At the end of the conference, participants issued a declaration.
The second conference, held in Vienna between April 24-26, 2023 broadened the scope of participants and included not only representatives of Afghan women’s organizations but also representatives of ethnic and religious minorities in Afghanistan. At the end of the conference participants issued a second declaration.
