Executive Summary Turkey after the elections

Over the last 21 years under AKParti rule, Turkey has gradually turned into a competitive authoritarian regime which has been characterized by state capture, a partial judiciary, the undermining of democratic institutions and processes, the control of the media and restrictions on the opposition and the limitation of democratic liberties. Gradual autocratization was legitimized by strong electoral majorities for the ruling party and President Erdoğan. What have the historic elections changed? How will election results affect the political system and economy? Is a return to democracy possible? What will happen with the losers of the elections?  What to expect for relations with the EU and the US? And what does the Turkish example tell about the future of other competitive authoritarian regimes?
